Hello, Geoff, and many thanks for your info re IE8 Spellchecker.   I am now more confused than ever !!   On receipt of your message I reinstalled IE8 and rechecked.   I can assure you that I am able to go into TOOLS - OPTIONS - SPELLING and get a check in FRENCH (which I don't really need!)
You mention 'APPEARANCE' where I can change the language by  'Add' - where can I find 'APPEARANCE', please ?   Thanks again, Geoff, hope I'm not being to much of a 'dummy'

Tools > Internet Options > bottom of window - Appearance

But Dennis, I cant find Tools > Options > Spelling
in Internet Explorer ver 8!

IE 8 does not have a built in Spell Checker Denis, Have you got IeSpell installed by any chance because that will show as an option under 'Tools' or on right click of the mouse.
